25 Voith Water Tractors are already in service in various ports on the South African Cape. Three new Voith Water Tractors are currently under construction. But the National Ports Authority of South Africa is anticipating additional demand for tugs and has therefore ordered another two such vessels. Voith is delivering the propulsion components.

Each of the two new Voith Water Tractors (VWT) is fitted with two Voith Schneider Propellers (VSP) type 32R5/265-2. The Voith delivery scope for each vessel also includes the mechanical control, a DTL 1330 turbo coupling, as well as an SBG 160 bow tooth coupling. The newly ordered ships will be built by Southern African Shipyards, which were also responsible for the construction of the three previous sister vessels. The drive components will be delivered by mid 2010, and the ships are expected to enter service in spring/summer 2011.

The VWTs of the H-Class (Harbor Class) measure 31 meters in length, are 11.5 meters wide and have a maximum draught of 6.18 meters. Two diesel engines, each rated at 2640 kW, drive the Voith Schneider Propellers, which bring the VWTs to a maximum speed of 12 knots with a bollard pull of 70 tons.

The Coega Development is one of South Africa's largest infrastructure projects. On an area of 12,000 hectares, only 20 kilometers east of Port Elizabeth, a gigantic industrial area with excellent infrastructure connections to roads, rail and water has been created. The new Ngquara Deep Sea Port is the eighth and also the largest port in South Africa. With depths of up to 18 meters, even the largest container vessels can enter the harbor and be unloaded there.

Voith Turbo (voithturbo.com), the specialist for hydrodynamic drive, coupling and braking systems for road, rail and industrial applications, as well as for ship propulsion systems, is a Group Division of Voith AG.

Voith sets standards worldwide for papermaking technology, power transmission, energy technology, and industrial services. Voith was founded in 1867. With approximately 40,000 employees, annual sales of € 4.9 billion and over 290 locations worldwide, Voith is one of the largest family-owned companies in Europe.

Voith (voith.com) is an official partner of the initiative "Germany - Land of ideas."
