GoMobile 2009, Malaysia’s ultimate mobile lifestyle event, this year launched its GoMobile Week at the inaugural GoMobile Conference which was officiated by Y.B. Dato' Seri Utama Dr. Rais Yatim, Minister of Information, Communication and Culture.
The conference featured leading edge speakers and decision makers from the Malaysian mobile ecosystem. The sessions consisted of talks and panel sessions and focused dialogue that brought together regulators, the industry and consumer representatives.
Kashminder Singh, Director of CommTechAsia, organisers of GoMobile expressed happiness that the conference has brought together the entire mobile ecosystem. “We are honoured to have received support from both the government and the industry, not only at this conference but also for the gala dinner and GoMobile Expo. The involvement of SKMM, MDeC and Maxis as well as a host of other organisations has gone a long way towards making this the major mobile lifestyle event in Malaysia. The tremendous interest generated for the GoMobile events confirms our belief that the mobile lifestyle is increasingly being adopted by Malaysians. The mobile generation has arrived and everyone – from businesses to society – has to adapt to the call of mobile”
The conference which adopted the theme ‘Fast Forward For Mobile’ this year focused on two broad areas in its sessions. The first was the expectation by both the Government and consumers alike for the rollout of reliable high speed mobile networks with the capacity to deal with exponential demand for bandwidth that will result out of the trend of consumers adopting mobile devices as their primary Internet devices. Mobile broadband will play a role in achieving national broadband targets. A significant portion of the national broadband goal of bringing broadband to 50% of households by the end of 2010 is expected to be fulfilled by mobile technologies. It is vital that the networks being built now and in the near future meet the needs and expectations of a new breed of consumers who are adopting the mobile lifestyle.
The other area focused on meeting the demand for content and applications that these high speed wireless networks and powerful mobile devices such as smartphones and Netbooks will generate. Participants explored the vast possibilities that arise from an increasingly mobile lifestyle. Sessions covered the issues of content creation and innovation, opportunities and challenges for the mobile content and services industry and many more. One interesting session focused on creating content and services for 1Malaysia where mobile entrepreneurs explored opportunities to create content and applications that build unity, bridge the digital divide and enhance the delivery of government services.
The conference according to Kashminder is timely because the demand for content and services is expected to skyrocket not only locally but globally. “The mobile revolution is transforming the world. New services and innovations are emerging daily and consumers are beginning to grasp the exciting possibilities of an increasingly mobile world. The market potential is truly immense and Malaysian entrepreneurs have to seize their share of these opportunities. I am confident that the GoMobile Conference would have helped them clarify their vision and focus areas.”
The organisers with the cooperation of the GoMobile Mobile TV Partner, I-Pixel have also ensured that those unable to get a seat at the conference would be able to follow the proceedings on mobile and also online. The proceedings were streamed live to three different microsites which catered for computers, most mobile phone models and one stream also specially for iPhones.
“The GoMobile Conference, the GoMobile Expo and the Mobile World Star Awards and Gala Dinner are our contributions to the mobile community,” said Kashminder. “Our vision is to make GoMobile the ultimate mobile lifestyle event. We believe that it has the potential to grow into a regional event and we look forward to the continued support of all parties.”
