Representatives from ByteWyze Computer Services recently participated in Bike MS: Historic New Bern Ride 2009 to raise funds to support people living with multiple sclerosis in Eastern North Carolina and throughout the United States. ByteWyze team members Chip Harrell and David Yurko joined over 2,000 cyclists on September 12-13 to ride through rural Eastern North Carolina.
Multiple sclerosis (or MS) is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but new treatments and advances in research are giving new hope to people affected by the disease. MS has personally touched David Yurko, an account executive with ByteWyze, over the past two years. He says his participation in this year’s event had a special purpose.
“My brother-in-law was diagnosed with MS last year,” says Yurko. “This year, a dear friend of my wife’s and mine was diagnosed. My cycling jersey had the names of the people we were personally riding in honor of printed on it. It was an amazing experience having those names imprinted on my jersey. I really felt that all of those people were riding with me for those two days. It was an incredible experience.”
This year marks Yurko’s third year riding in this event while Chip Harrell, a technician for ByteWyze, is in his sixth year riding on behalf of MS. Both men say that they are planning to ride again next year.
According to the Eastern North Carolina MS website, 2,250 cyclists and 400 volunteers participated in this year’s Bike MS event. As of September 22, over $1,350,000 has been raised to fund cutting-edge research, life-changing programs and services, and policy-sculpting advocacy efforts. The organization hopes to meet its goal of $1.7 million before the October 5 fundraising deadline.
