Football fans will be able to enjoy this year’s Champions’ League in a completely new way, thanks to groundbreaking features developed by streaming technology company Flumotion. Live streaming over the internet is an increasingly popular way of consuming sports because it allows users to watch video from any broadband connection. Flumotion’s latest innovation takes this a step further as it also aims at breaking time constraints enabling users to travel in time during live events.
For client Aragón Televisión Flumotion not only created a football branded user experience, but also developed a surprising new feature which is bound to create enthusiasm among sports fans. Although games are transmitted in real time, the player offers the possibility to pause the game, ensuring users do not miss a single second of their favourite sport. When resuming the game, the viewer can choose between two options: either pick up the stream from where he left off or go straight to the real time transmission. These two options can also be viewed simultaneously in case the user wishes to watch both feeds. Until now, this feature was only available to TV viewers with high end PVRs. Flumotion is now bringing it to the masses thanks to the internet.
In addition to the time travel feature, Flumotion’s player displays rich information and statistics during the course of the match. Research shows that displaying engaging information is a great tool to captivate viewers and prolong viewing times. The player will also allow users to place bets or access more than one game from the same player through a multi-tab functionality.
All these features are supported by Flumotion’s advanced streaming platform. The Champions’ League service is one example among others explaining why an increasing number of sports organizations are trusting Flumotion with their high value content. Recently, Real Madrid streamed the introduction of Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema using Flumotion’s platform and seamlessly delivered over 500,000 connections from all over the globe.
“Our full service solutions enable us to offer customised services not only to major TV stations, but also to smaller content providers, who don’t want to stay behind in the rapid development of video on the Internet”, says Jean Noel Saunier, Flumotion’s CEO.
As an end-to-end streaming provider, Flumotion covers the whole streaming process, from capturing the video signal from satellite or the client’s facilities, to designing the interface through which the user watches videos. This enables the transmission of live events as well as making them instantly available on demand. Flumotion’s multi-format technology enables the transformation of the video to any device such as the iPhone possible, while supporting any major format such Adobe Flash, Windows Media or Apple QuickTime.
