The Preiss Company (“TPCO”), the largest provider of off-campus student housing at North Carolina State University, Clemson University, Auburn University in Alabama, and the University of Texas in Austin and the second largest provider at UNC Charlotte, has announced record hires during the month of August. Forty-seven new employees were hired at seven of the company’s housing properties, as well as in their corporate office. This recent addition continues to support the company’s strength in the student housing industry.
The greatest growth occurred at both TPCO properties that serve the University of Texas. University Village at Austin and University Estates at Austin hired 15 employees each. Following are University Village at Clemson and University Village at Auburn, which both hired five team members, TPCO’s Charlotte properties hired a total of five employees, University Village at the Coast added one team member while TPCO hired one employee in their corporate office. Of the total employees hired, over 80% were hired in the areas of leasing and maintenance. The hires coincided with the company’s “in turn” cycle where properties are prepared for incoming residents.
Company Chief Financial Officer, Kirk Preiss, says that no matter how bad the economy gets, few parents are willing to sacrifice their child’s education. “Education is one of the last things people give up,” says Preiss. “People may have to forego yearly vacations or put off buying that new car for one more year, but they’ll always find a way to ensure that their children receive a college education.”
In an article entitled “Recession Proof?” by Bendix Anderson, which appeared in the November/December 2008 issue of Apartment Finance Today, Anderson writes that student-housing developers are finding places to succeed, despite tough economic times. He goes on to state, “Even before the economy weakened, college enrollment was expected to grow 11 percent between 2003 and 2013, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.”
“As we continue to move forward, it will remain imperative for us to continue to recruit and retain qualified, personable, and service-oriented team members,” Preiss adds. “Our corporate mission is to ‘Provide the Best Student Living Experience Anywhere’ and to do that, we need to hire individuals who share in our commitment to providing outstanding customer service. We remain confident in the student housing industry and look forward to continuing to grow The Preiss Company family.”
