A new, luxury self-catering holiday cottage has laid claim to the title “Best View in Britain Barn”. Of course there are plenty of fine views in Britain but perhaps few with such a wide, far-reaching panorama. Located on the edge of the Peak District it provides a gateway to some of the best outdoor holiday pursuits as well as cultural gems. The Peak National Park is a ramblers paradise. And the well-known Gritstone Trail passes right behind Best View Barn, 56 kilometres of upland walking. The nearby town of Buxton is brimming with culture and arts.
Many people head for the beauty of The Lake District or the fine shores and scenery of the West Country, neither of which are the easiest to get to due to their long, narrow access roads. In the heart of England lies The Peak District, in particular a delightful corner where Cheshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire meet. The landscape is breathtaking, and perfect for walkers and cyclists. But it is also ideal for culture vultures. Nearby towns are packed full of history, from the spa towns of Buxton and Matlock to the grandiose stately homes of Chatsworth and the lesser known Gawsworth Hall.
Surprisingly, considering it is so relatively unvisited, this corner of The Peak District is extremely accessible. By rail, Virgin Trains bring you from London to Macclesfield in an hour and forty minutes. The road network is equally good, as the area is wedged between the M6 on the east and the M1 on the west. Manchester airport is just forty minutes away by car.
Whilst Best View in Britain Barn is isolated, the outstanding views draw you into the landscape. The luxury holiday cottage’s owner Miranda Rijks explains the attraction of the location. “Whilst most of our visitors are likely to choose us because of the spectacular scenery and outdoors pursuits, we also appeal to those who just love a great view and want to relax in comfort. We’re very lucky in this part of the world. We have the outdoors, the culture and the shopping. Manchester’s only thirty minutes away on the train.”
Whilst there will inevitably be other contenders for the title, Best View in Britain Barn has got there first, and it will be a hard one to beat. At 900 feet and facing due west, it has some of the most spectacular sunsets in Britain, some of which are displayed on the holiday cottages’ website.
