MDS Services, LLC has obtained federal Hub Zone certification, which will allow it to better serve the needs and contracting requirements of the federal market place. The Hub Zone program provides federal contracting opportunities for small business concerns located in economically distressed urban and rural communities. Qualified HUB Zone companies can obtain sole-source contracts and a preference in competitive awards.
The HUB Zone Empowerment Contracting Program stimulates economic development and creates jobs in urban and rural communities by providing Federal contracting preferences to small businesses. These preferences go to small businesses that obtain Historically Underutilized Business Zone (HUB Zone) certification, in part by employing staff who live in a HUB Zone. The company must also maintain a "principal office" in one of these specially designated areas.
To qualify, a small business must have a principal office located within a HUB Zone and at least 35% of the company's employees must also live in a HUB Zone (though it doesn't have to be the same zone). Contracts available to HUB Zone-certified business concerns include competitive contracts (when two or more qualified HUB Zone businesses will submit offers), sole-source contracts (when only one concern will submit a bid), open contracts (which offer a pricing preference to HUB Zone businesses), and subcontracting (which includes a goal for subcontracting through HUB Zone concerns.
“We are thrilled with this certification. It took about three months from application to approval. HUB Zone is a very positive program because it encourages companies to bring jobs where they are most needed, “said Janet Johnson, Business Development Director.
