Last week stars turned out in force to play in the highly anticipated Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship, proving that the typical Great British weather would not dampen spirits on the fairways.
As 2009 marks the 40th anniversary of Tony Jacklin CBE’s legendary Open Championship victory, it was great to have him hosting the event for the second year running, and there were certainly plenty of people there to help him celebrate.
There were two days of Celebrity-Amateur challenges and both saw huge names from the world of sport, stage and screen including Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, Ron Atkinson, Peter Shilton MBE OBE, the legendary Jimmy Tarbuck, ‘Coronation Street’s’ William Roache MBE, Jasper Carrott OBE, Peter Schmeichel and ‘Strictly Come Dancing’s’ Brendan Cole amongst many others.
Tuesday 4th August saw some great names tee off with their amateur teams; however Jasper Carrott stole the show coming in first place at 83 points with his team ‘Bookatz.’ They were pushed hard by runners up ‘William De Broe’ with Charlie Ross and in 3rd place ‘Shortland Horne’ with individual winning celebrity, Clive Abbott.
The Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship Pro-Am (britishpar3championship.co.uk) was held on the 5th & 6th of August and was home to some huge names from the European Tour including Graeme Storm, John Mellor, Stuart Davis, Lee Slattery, Robert Dinwiddie and Philip Archer, to name a few. The two day event was a hugely exciting affair, despite the bad weather, as well as a tough course and unpredictable results, there were also a number of fantastic feats. One highlight saw Craig Swinburn produce an amazing 52 on the second day, including a pair of aces on the 4th and 10th holes winning an exclusive, luxury holiday to Andalucia in the process.
Eventual winner Steve Carter, a teaching pro at South Staffordshire Golf Club in Wolverhampton, was delighted to contend with so many great names in the sport and take away the title Farmfoods British Par 3 Champion. He also took away a wheelbarrow filled with 5,000 pound coins, which has been a tradition at this event since 1933, when the legendary Alf Padgham was the man to make off with the barrow.
On Friday 7th August, the second Celebrity-Amateur Challenge really got into full swing with the sun shining and huge crowds of spectators arriving at Nailcote Hall to witness all of the action on the Cromwell Course.
A really tight competition finished with the top team led by Tony Currie on 85 points followed closely by Ian Cole’s team with Pete Langford of the ‘Barron Knights’ on 84 points. In the celebrity category, Clayton Blackmore successfully defended his title with a 2 under par 38 points closely followed by Gary Wolstenholme, Sean Jacklin and Chris Nicholl on 36 points. With just one point behind was host of the event, Tony Jacklin and boxer John H Stracey.
The evening entertainment throughout the four days was second to none, with players and their guests enjoying some delicious meals and winding down with some excellent performances. One special act in particular was by Elliott Evans from ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ who performed two songs in memory of Michael Jackson. Another act was the incredible mind reader Graham Jolley, who completely stunned the audience with his remarkable talent.
Fundraising activities throughout the event were a huge success and an incredible amount was raised for the chosen charities ‘Rainbows Children’s Hospice’ and ‘A Gentlemen’s Night Out.’
The Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship 2009 was a sensational event and an excellent time was had by players and spectators alike. With players already signing up to next year’s event, 2010 already looks set to be even better!
