AboveNet Communications UK Ltd, a leading provider of high-bandwidth connectivity solutions for business and carriers, is announcing its tenth birthday this month.
When AboveNet established its London office ten years ago, it was one of a few companies providing a fibre optic network for businesses in the capital. UK managing director John Donaldson commented, “Our vision to provide fibre connectivity to London’s businesses radically challenged the established telco model. Instead of supplying customers fixed bandwidth over shared networks we provided our customers with their own dedicated fibre optic solution. This gives each of our customers a highly scalable, reliable and secure solution. When customers inevitably need to upgrade their bandwidth with traditional networks, they suffer significant cost and delays in re-provisioning. AboveNet’s dedicated fibre solutions enable easy upgrades to provide the bandwidth and protocol our customers need, when they need it.”
Donaldson continued, “We have come a long way in the last ten years but the next few years will be the most exciting. The high capacity, reliability and scalable nature of fibre is no longer just for the world’s largest corporations – even small and medium-sized businesses are demanding these types of solutions. Today private fibre optic solutions are not only affordable, they are essential.”
The future of fibre
Industry experts see fibre optic networks as the future of the telecom industry. Their speed, capacity and reliability make them the obvious choice for businesses that need to send and receive vast levels of data as quickly and securely as possible. Also, the government’s recent pledge to provide funding for fibre connectivity will enable an increase on a national scale, rather than just concentrating investment in London.
“Modern businesses, especially in the financial industry, are all about efficiency. People want more for less with as little hassle as possible. Fibre optic networks embrace this model and will prove to be central to the expansion of communications in the coming years,” commented Donaldson.
The value of fibre
The last decade has seen more and more businesses invest in fibre, with many of London’s largest banks now using AboveNet’s fibre-optic infrastructure. This trend towards increased investment in fibre is set to continue due to the great demand for stable and reliable networks.
Ten years as a leading fibre optic provider in London means AboveNet has the experience and the infrastructure to continue to grow with the expanding market. AboveNet has a significant number of buildings connected to its network and plans to add more. “This year AboveNet plans to connect a record number of buildings in London and expand its data centre network,” said Donaldson. “We pride ourselves on being a stable, well-connected provider in London and we are looking forward to what the future holds.”
