Earnshaw Books, the Hong Kong-based publisher specializing in Chinese history and culture, announced the release of 'Shanghai Story Walks', a collection of walking tours of several of Shanghai's most charming neighborhoods with a unique insider's perspective.
Yvette Ho Madany, the book's author, is a Shanghai native with deep personal connections to the city and its past. Her tours, which draw heavily from her well-connected family's experiences, paint a rich and colorful account of the Chinese movers and shakers in the city during its wildest days, before the communist victory in 1949.
"This is the first book of Shanghai walking tours written by someone who grew up in Shanghai and still has family living here," said Madany. "With such a close personal connection, the city naturally has special meaning for me."
Since 2007, Madany has been using her deep knowledge of the city's past to conduct guided walking tours for the local expatriate community. These tours became so popular that she was encouraged to write them down so that an even larger audience would have the benefit of her insights.
All of the proceeds from the tours have been used to buy school lunches for the children of migrant workers living in Shanghai. "I will donate all of my royalties from this book to start another charity project, possibly art classes for migrant children," said Madany. "This would be done to honor my parents, who love Chinese art, and my father's grandfather, who was an art collector."

Yvette Ho Madany was born in Shanghai and educated in the US. For the past two years, she has conducted charity walks for foreigners in Shanghai to benefit migrant children and still writes for Shanghai's expatriate magazines. She and her family now live in the US.
