This is the first time Domus Academy joins hands with a foreign partner to establish a joint Master’s degree programme outside Italy. The first NTU-Domus Academy joint Master’s programme, to be hosted by NTU’s School of Art, Design and Media (ADM), will focus on the business, conceptual and strategic aspects of interactive design interpreting the potentialities of ICT world in a contemporary and international perspective.
The collaboration was sealed on 1 July 2009, with both sides inking a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Milan, Italy. The signatories were Mrs Maria Grazia Mazzocchi, Founder and President of Domus Academy, and Professor Bertil Andersson, NTU Provost and former chief executive of the European Science Foundation and current Nobel Trustee.
“The agreement is part of an expansion project of cooperation between the two countries,” said Mrs Maria Grazia Mazzocchi. “Singapore represents a gate to Asia, a bridge leading to new business relationships with Far East and new and incredible job opportunities.”
"This collaboration will bring the finest European designers to Singapore and transform it into a leading and vibrant design hub in Asia,” said Professor Bertil Andersson. “The Italian Hi-Design sensibilities and NTU's Asian perspective coming together will not only give a global perspective to Asian students but also offer Asian dimension for international students.”
The intensive coursework-based Master’s programme aims to cultivate knowledge on the growing impact interactive design technologies have on design and the environment. It is specifically designed to enable students to understand interactive design in greater depth and enhance their professional competence. Commencing in January 2010, the programme is composed of an international audience of students coming not only from Singapore but from many different countries in the world, testifying the sensitivity of Domus Academy in over 20 years of activity to look beyond the Italian border and give a company oriented global vision.
The core courses offered under the Master’s programme include Interaction Design Languages and Interactive Technologies. Conducted over two semesters, students can look forward to spending six months in Milan – the seat of fashion and design – training and interacting with Italian professors and practitioners in design industries. They will be engaged in a series of design workshops aim at creating concepts and scenarios in the fields of interactive objects, tools and environments, media formats and languages, and digital services. Part of the semester is dedicated to the work in the cultural context of Milan, testing the students’ competitiveness in an advanced environment.
After the semester spent in Milan, the students will return to Singapore and develop the Master’s thesis at NTU, where they will apply what they have learnt in Italy to the Far East context. They will be exposed to innovative research topics and cross-disciplinary activities. The Italian project leaders will pay visits to NTU to guide and support the students in their project development. The final works of the students will be exhibited in Singapore at the end of the academic year.
