Elite Sports Physical Therapy (ESPT) in Fremont, CA is excited to be the 1st PT Clinic in the area to offer true dance rehabilitation. Opening it's doors in 2007, the vision and mission of the facility was to provide cutting edge sports and orthopedic rehabilitation to the local community.
"It give us great pleasure to continue raising the bar not each and every year, but each and every day," says Jacon C. Chun, MPT, SCS, ATC, CSCS, ESPT's Director of Physical Therapy/CEO. "Our goal at ESPT is not to be your run-of-the-mill PT clinic. We want to be the Best and we want to bring rehabilitative care here in Fremont into the 21st Century."
A former physical therapist/athletic trainer with the Stanford University Sports Medicine Program, Jacon understand the rigors of competition/performance for young athletes. With the dance program, the goal was to provide that same level of care for performing artists.
"It's incredible what kids do these days," says Jacon, "Sometimes their extracurricular activities are a full-time job!! This opens up young athletes and performing artists to a world of injuries that was not so prevalent previously. This means we need to begin addressing issues of muscle imbalance, pain, and biomechanics at a younger age."
In February of this year, ESPT brought on to their professional staff: Physical Therapist Charissa L. Chaban, MPT, ATC. Charissa had the privilege of training at the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries in New York. In addition to treating dancers, Charissa herself is a professional ballet dancer in the Oakland Ballet Company.
"We are thrilled to have Charissa join our team ESPT. She is a wonderful clinician and it was actually her idea to start the dance program," states Chun.
"From her personal experience as a dancer and dance teacher, coupled with her clinical observations, she saw a need and I completely support her 100% in wanting to address these needs. That's what we do as healthcare professionals."
So what is Dance Therapy? What does Dance Rehabilitation look like? At ESPT (espt-ca.com) they are offering 3 unique services: Dance Injury Prevention Screening, Pointe Shoe Readiness Screening, and Physical Therapy for Dance Related Injuries.
Injury prevention screens are designed to evaluate the dancer and discuss concerns with the artist before and injury occurs. Pointe shoe readiness will look at core, hip, leg, and ankle strength and ankle/toe flexibility to evaluate readiness to actually do pointe shoe work. And for dance-related injuries, you will have the advantage at ESPT of having your rehabilitation carried out by a professional dancer who will understand your needs and the challenges of dance.
