Earnshaw Books, the Hong Kong-based publisher specializing in Chinese history and culture, announced the re-release of Aleko E. Lilius' 1930 classic 'I Sailed with Chinese Pirates'.
In the first half of the 20th century, the islands near Hong Kong and Macau were a hornets’ nest of piracy. No ship passing through the South China Sea was safe from the ever-present menace of robbery, murder and kidnap. In 'I Sailed with Chinese Pirates', Lilius infiltrates and sails with the gang of the notorious pirate queen Lai Choi San and recounts their horrible misdeeds.
"The pirates of the South China Sea in the 1920s were every bit as terrifying as the Somalian pirates of today," said Earnshaw Books chief editor Derek Sandhaus. “Lilius' book was and still is the best account of these roving bands of ruffians ever committed to paper."
The book tale takes readers behind the scenes of South China’s pirate community as Lilius lives with them and records their crimes. There are stories of buccaneering and murder on the high seas as well as opium smoking and gambling in the seedy underbellies of Hong Kong and Macau; sunken treasure, cutlass-wielding seadogs and spectacular escapes.
