The 2009 Diversity Scorecard, as reported in the May issue of The Minority Law Journal, is based on a revamped ranking formula, which focuses on the success that firms have in increasing and retaining the number of minority partners, not just focusing on the number of minority attorneys (partner and non-partner) within a firm. Year over year, Orrick has consistently ranked in the top 15 in the overall category.
This year's survey was sent to the country's largest and highest-grossing firms, those that qualify for inclusion in The Am Law 200, The NLJ 250, or both. The Diversity Scorecard results are one of the four key elements in deciding The American Lawyer's "A-List." Orrick ranked seventh on the 2008 "A-List."
"At Orrick, we are committed to ensuring our diversity program is one of access and inclusion," said Lorraine McGowen, a restructuring partner and firmwide chair of Orrick's Diversity Initiative. "Supporting, retaining and promoting our diverse lawyers is key in meeting our firm goal of delivering our clients top legal and business solutions."
Orrick's 2009 partner elevations are evidence of a strong and continual commitment to promote minority and women lawyers to firm leadership positions: 33% women globally; 25% U.S. women; and 33% U.S. minority.
Orrick established one of the first law firm diversity programs in 1990 to ensure the firm's success in its efforts to hire, retain and promote diverse lawyers. Orrick's innovative programs have achieved sustained progress in creating a more inclusive work environment and legal profession. From mentoring circles and affinity groups that provide diverse lawyers with access to resources and information that enhance their opportunities and exposure and provide executive committee members with reverse mentoring opportunities, to its efforts within the community and bar associations, Orrick is committed to advancing diversity for the firm, its clients and the profession as a whole.
