As a recognized leader in the small electric vehicle space, Segway Inc. today announced the availability of two new Patroller models. Designed with the direct input of existing customers, the enhancements will help patrolling officers and public safety personnel keep communities safe around the world.
The Patroller models are identifiable by their highly reflective surfaces and an integrated lighting system. Additional product enhancements include a newly designed LeanSteer™ frame, a front bag specifically designed to carry officers' cargo, and an upper shield for affixing the organization's insignia.
"Law enforcement and security professionals demand a lot from our products," said Jim Norrod, CEO of Segway, Inc. "As we've grown to serve a customer base of more than 1,000 patrol installations worldwide, we've been collecting feedback that has been directly interpreted in to the new Segway Patroller models. They are very durable and have the visual performance enhancements for which the patrolling officers have been asking," he said.
"We've been using 22 Segway PTs very successfully for our community policing efforts," said Sgt. Jim Hollingsworth at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. "The added visibility and integrated tactical bag in the new Patroller model help improve police identification," he said.
The Segway Patroller is available now and free demonstrations are available to qualified organizations that register at segway.com/patrol.
The Segway Patroller Models At a Glance
The Segway Patroller comes in either an i2 or x2 version. The i2 is optimized for demanding patrol applications that require the rider to transition from indoor to outdoor settings while getting the most out of battery range on a single charge, which is up to 24 miles or 39 km. The x2 features rugged tires suited for off-road patrol environments such as parks, trails or cobblestone. Built-in lift handles on the x2 and included cargo frames on the i2 make for a sturdy lift position and attach point for optional additional side cargo.
Every Patroller model comes with the following:
• Rider-side-access Patroller bag with water bottle holder and key hook;
• Upper shield for affixing organization insignia;
• Optic yellow or white 3M™ DiamondGrade™ reflectivity for front bag and upper shield with additional reflective lettering for multi-language POLICE or SECURITY;
• Integrated lighting system (either red/blue or amber/white) with handlebar-mounted control;
• Comfort mats;
• Belt clip-on LED taillight;
• Anodized height-adjustable LeanSteer™ frame with laser-etched height demarcations;
• Wireless InfoKey™ controller with wrist strap;
• Standard charge cable and User Materials.

Segway for Patrol; A Worldwide Trend
With an increasing requirement for organizations to do more with less, Segway Personal Transporters (PTs) offer municipalities, airports, military bases, private security firms, and emergency response teams ability to reconnect officers with the communities they serve, improve response time, and save on fuel and fleet maintenance costs.
For law enforcement, the Segway PT is used primarily for community policing and large/community event support – providing for increased positive interactions with the public. Existing customers include police departments such as Washington, D.C. Metro; Chicago; Charlotte-Mecklenburg, N.C.; Shandong Province (China); and Miami. Mexico City recently made a purchase to increase its fleet in the Iztapalapa district to 100 units for its force. Notable airport customers include LAX, ORD, and DFW.
Private security requirements are equally demanding with the added responsibility of maximizing security resources under tight budget constraints. Customers such as Simon Malls, Securitas, Allied Barton, Sonae Sierra (Portugal) and Target utilize Segway PTs shift-after-shift as a preventative measure against crime and to provide expedited emergency response to the customers they serve.
At more than 150 Universities, public safety officials are decreasing the utilization of their gas-fueled vehicles and responding more quickly to incidents that take them indoors and out on the Segway PT. Some existing Segway customers include Howard University and the University of Miami.
