57 medals were awarded at the International Wine Challenge including two Golds, and 52 medals by Decanter Awards including one Trophy.
The range of appellations garnering praise highlights the diversity of the region with medals given to sparkling, red, white, rosé and sweet wines. Appellations included – Vouvray, Muscadet and two wines from Loire Project Cabernet Franc 2009.
Pierre Pichot, export manager at InterLoire*, the regional trade body, commented on the results “as another good year for Loire Valley Wines.” He added, “The number of awards achieved is clear demonstration of the quality of the wines from our region and their relevance to the UK market.”
Project Loire Cabernet Franc, the innovative technical project focussing on creating terroir wines more suited to the UK market, and now in its fourth year was present at the LIWF, with a 40m2 stand. Some 55 Ambassador wines from the past three years of the Project were featured attracting over 250 visitors over the three days of the Fair. Feedback on the quality of the wines presented was high with several serious enquiries from UK agents and buyers. Sam Harrop MW, consultant on the Project commented: “One of the key objectives of the Project is to encourage producers to make more consistent styles from one vintage to the next. Certainly each vintage has been extremely different, which has made this goal more difficult to achieve. However, it is pleasing that a core group of vignerons are now showing greatly improved and more consistent product than ever before. There is no question in my mind that the vignerons are committed to improving quality and, as a result, finding the market respect that they deserve.”

In total, wines from the Loire Valley wines was rewarded with one Decanter Trophy, 3 IWC Gold medals, 13 Silver, 60 Bronze and 33 Commended medals.
