Author-it Software Corporation (author-it.com) today announced that the NZ Patent and Trademark Office has approved a patent for Author-it Xtend, a key innovation that further expands the company's growing intellectual property portfolio. Applications are in place to extend the protection of this innovation to other jurisdictions.
Author-it Xtend breaks new ground in the enterprise authoring and content management industry by providing a faster, more efficient method for the reuse and sharing of content and knowledge within an organization. "We know that the reuse of content is the number one benefit that organizations seek from content management applications" said Paul Trotter, ASC Founder and Product Architect. "And yet, our research revealed that those enterprises using content management applications do not reuse content as much as they could. We asked ourselves why this would be the case and the answer was; content reuse takes planning, discipline and knowledge of existing reuse opportunities", said Trotter.
In response to this issue, the Author-it R&D team came up with a totally new and unique innovation based on Author-it's relational database technology. They decided to automate reuse and expose reuse opportunities right at the point of authoring. With Author-it Xtend reuse opportunities are revealed as the author types. After as few as three words, Author-it Xtend uses its patented search technology to suggest similar content from the Author-it Database for reuse. This eliminates the need for authors to perform time consuming manual searches and makes all of the content contained in an organization's database available to content creators. The time and efficiency savings are considerable, in fact, studies have indicated that knowledge workers spend up to 35% of their time searching for information, often unsuccessfully.
"Receiving this patent is another important milestone as ASC accelerates its strategic growth plan" said Steve Davis, ASC President. "We're committed to developing innovative products based on our "real world" experience in the content management industry" said Davis. "We have significant innovations planned in the Author-it roadmap and will continue to seek legal protection for these innovations. The benefits of Author-it Xtend enhance the value of the Author-it product suite as a whole. Its value extends to the internal usage of Author-it Xtend within our own business where we have seen greater consistency and more than 30% savings in terms of the time to produce documentation."
