The viral game is an an exam-free alternative to GCSEs that encourages engagement through a practical approach to learning and assessment. The game launched last week has already seen over half a million plays.
The game, called Apartment 13, is aimed at science teachers and highlights the benefits of OCR Nationals, which offer engaging topics such as forensic science. The game is a three part cartoon in which the player becomes a lead forensic detective – analysing evidence, locating suspects, performing an autopsy and naming a culprit. Points are scored based on accuracy, successful deductions and time taken. Players can enter their scores onto a leader board and email the game to others.
TAMBA was appointed to create the viral game after producing a collection of microsites for OCR.
The OCR game is a high-quality viral, aimed primarily at teachers but also students. TAMBA balanced the complex subject of forensic investigation and autopsy with appealing graphics and a challenging concept,” said Kay Hammond, CEO of TAMBA. “Taking the role of a detective is the perfect approach for an educationally-focused audience, and adding a fun element to a GCSE equivalent will generate interest and build awareness.”
OCR is a leading UK awarding body, providing qualifications that engage learners of any age at school, college, in work or through part time learning. Over 13,000 educational centres use OCR A Levels, GCSEs and vocational qualifications including OCR Nationals, NVQs and Basic Skills.
Apartment 13 (ocrnationals.com/sciencegame) has been created to increase awareness of the OCR National qualification, which is designed to recognise achievements in a modern, practical way,” said Michelle Hughes, E-Marketing Manager at OCR. “TAMBA was appointed for this project as it has an excellent reputation for viral games. The striking graphic style we have chosen, teamed with TAMBA’s seeding expertise, can really make an impact on the market.”
