The annual Edinburgh vs. Glasgow Universities Boat Race took place on the Clyde yesterday, with spectators packing the course to cheer on both teams. The race is the second oldest varsity contest in Britain behind Oxford\Cambridge and was first held in 1877. This year marked the tenth anniversary of its return to the original championship course on Glasgow Green, and was generously supported by Dr Walter Scott.
Both institutions have traded victories in the weeks building up to the event, with the Mobiqa-sponsored Edinburgh University undeniably holding the upper hand. However, the last minute introduction of several internationals into their crews ensured that Glasgow were certainly more than a force to be reckoned with on race day. With Glasgow reigning champions in the men's event and Edinburgh seeking to defend their crown in the respective ladies race, the day was poised to be one of high drama.
Edinburgh University dominated the day’s events by rowing to victory in the women’s 1sts and 2nds events, the men’s 2nd team also emerged victorious with the men’s 1st team being narrowly beaten by a very strong performance by Glasgow University.
Nick Rankin, rowing coach and CEO of Mobiqa comments, “It has been a terrific day for Edinburgh University rowing, although we were obviously disappointed to not win all four events.”
