The Preiss Company (“TPCO”), the largest provider of off-campus student housing at North Carolina State University, Clemson University, Auburn University in Alabama, and the University of Texas in Austin and the second largest provider at UNC Charlotte, is proud to announce the promotion of Kyle Barger to Director of Construction Management. In his new role, Barger will be responsible for managing capital improvement projects for the company’s most recent acquisition—University Village at the Coast—and overseeing TPCO’s “Green Initiative”, which focuses on making properties more environmentally friendly while helping to reduce costs.
Barger has been with TPCO since 2007 and was a member of the company’s Acquisition and Development (A&D) Team. He is a graduate of North Carolina State University with a BA in Business Management and has an NC Real Estate Brokers license. He is currently a member of Triangle MLS, the NC Association of Realtors (NCAR), and the National Association of Realtors (NAR). In April, he obtained his Green Designation with NAR. Barger recently supervised $1.3M in “green” capital expenditures work to TPCO’s Austin property, University Estates at Austin—a 1,548-bed apartment property located within three miles of the University of Texas.
“University Estates will clearly serve as the benchmark for how we develop our properties in the future,” says Barger. “Our goal is to show that you don’t have to sacrifice personal comfort for global cause. Not only is The Preiss Company creating a first-class living experience for our residents, but we’re also taking the initiative to ensure that all of our properties are more efficient and help us continue to preserve our natural resources.”
At University Estates at Austin, TPCO installed high-efficiency aerators and showerheads to help conserve water without losing performance, installed compact fluorescent lighting in the kitchen and entry way of their upgraded units, used 100% recycled carpet, installed motion sensors at all the model sites, replaced exterior office lights with high-efficiency lighting, converted to Energy star appliances, replaced the HVAC in 85 units to achieve better efficiency, and used a laminate faux wood product which is more sustainable and has a longer life than carpet.
Barger says that in 2009, he wants to continue installing and replacing compact fluorescents (CFC) lighting where possible, using low or no VOC paint, regularly replacing filters to increase efficiency, and replacing existing toilets with high-efficiency flapperless toilets to conserve water. He is also looking to reduce the company’s yearly expenditures by establishing several strategic contracts with national vendors.
