Nordic ID is one of Europe’s leading providers of mobile computers and handheld terminals for mobile data collecting. In connection with the introduction of a new merchandise planning and control system that would make business processes transparent through item-level real-time inventory management, Kaiser’s Tengelmann looked for online-capable mobile computers.
“Our aim is to perform business processes such as the movement of goods, incoming goods, outgoing goods or inventories on a paperless basis and in real time – all at item level,” comments Lutz Endrikat, Head Organization at Kaiser’s Tengelmann.
Thus, high availability and the stable WLAN Roaming performance of the handheld important criteria for the supermarket chain in deciding in favor of the Nordic ID PL3000.
“Besides the outstanding WLAN Roaming behavior, what convinced us most about the PL3000 were remote maintenance and software distribution options and the standard Windows CE 6.0 operating system,” says Endrikat to explain the choice. “We also attached great importance to other users’ assessments. Their feedback on the PL3000 was consistently positive – particularly because of the one-hand operation, user friendliness and the large display.”
In November 2008, 660 mobile computers by Nordic ID were introduced at 300 Kaiser’s Tengelmann supermarkets to begin with. 840 more Nordic ID PL3000 devices will be rolled out at the remaining 400 outlets in the coming months. A total of 1,500 employees currently work with the mobile data collection devices, and ultimately the number will be approximately 5,000.
The handhelds are put to use throughout the branch environment – from sales floor to warehouse to cold store. There is a standard Web application installed on the MDE devices. Through it, the employees communicate by WLAN and VPN with the merchandise planning and control system at the computing center of Kaiser’s Tengelmann. For the employees, the Nordic ID PL3000 computers are the multi-functional interface to the merchandise planning and control system – the mobile computers enable them to spend more time on the sales floor where – by scan process and via the Web application – they can manage the movement of goods, process incoming and outgoing goods, carry out permanent inventory or make inventory postings. With the Nordic ID handheld terminals, the staff are informed at all times of the current status of stocks at their branch.
