The members of Alpha Lambda Zeta Fraternity, Inc. pride themselves in being politically involved and community focused with specific focus within the LGBT and minority communities. While remaining true to the principles of the fraternity, Latasha L. Hampton, known within the fraternity as Frat Elaborate, was recently recognized as the Social Justice Person of the Year at this year's Phoenix Black Pride Celebration which was hosted by Soul Purpose AZ.
Frat Elaborate was born in Chicago, IL into the most humbling of conditions to say the least. It is through the challenges she faced growing up in Chicago, she learned that involvement in positive activities, getting an education and hard work would be the path to her success and life fulfillment. After turning her troubled life around at 16 years of age Frat Elaborate chose to take control of her destiny. Frat Elaborate began to volunteer in the community, earned a scholarship to the College, honorably served her country in the US Army, and is currently one of the most respected Law Enforcement Officers in Tempe, AZ. Frat Elaborate has been recognized for her continued work with youth in the community, her involvement in the fight for Civil Rights for all Americans, and her dedication to public safety.
Frat Elaborate has met the challenge and remained true to Alpha Lambda Zeta Fraternity, Inc.’s principles of Fraternal Sisterhood, Community Volunteerism, Political Activism, Erudition, and Professionalism through her recent work within the organization’s Get out to Vote (GOTV) initiatives by organizing and running six registration drives hosted by the fraternity within the Tempe and Phoenix, AZ area. In addition, Frat Elaborate canvassed neighborhoods and phone banked for the Arizona Democratic Party; she had active participation in Veterans for Obama Campaigns, fought for Marriage Equality Initiatives, and fought to restore Constitutional Rights with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
It is this hard work and dedication to excellence that led Frat Elaborate to be recognized by Soul Purpose AZ as the 2009 ‘Social Justice Person of the Year.’ The ‘Social Justice Person of the Year Award’ recognizes individuals who are material in supporting community advancement through leadership by helping people in the community better themselves. Soul Purpose AZ is a grassroots volunteer organization dedicated to serving Phoenix Metropolitan LGBT Community and was developed approximately three years ago out of the growing need for resources and visibility within LGBT communities of color. Their goal is provide visibility, self empowerment, and leadership for black LGBT through a combination of education, social activities, and community collaborations.
Alpha Lambda Zeta Fraternity, Inc. (alphalambdazeta.com) was proud to serve as a sponsor for this year’s Phoenix Black Pride celebration by providing funds, locating a facility, assisting with set-up for the event, and leading one of the workshops entitled "Identifying and Combating Negative Stereotypes within the LGBT Community." Frat Elaborate was material in the development and presentation of this workshop, and the celebration in its entirety. She volunteered her time and talents to help make the event a success. To help ensure that future Black Prides in AZ are just as successful Frat Elaborate decided to become a member of the Soul Purpose planning committee.
