It was a last minute call to action by VONS regional offices, one in which all 23 Ventura County Vons store managers and employees readily supported.
The one-day food drive on March 7 to benefit FOOD Share, Ventura County’s regional food bank, brought in a total of $1,600 and more than 9,000 lbs. of food that will immediately be distributed through FOOD Share’s warehouse in Oxnard and its 150 partner agencies and food pantries throughout the county who serve nearly 40,000 people each month.
“Our customers really came through for FOOD Share,” said Daymond Rice, director, Public Affairs and Government Relations for Vons. “As a large food company, we are in a unique position to be at the forefront of hunger and we understand the difficulties food agencies are facing this year. We are thrilled at the results of this latest effort on their behalf.”
“We would like to thank everyone in our community who has donated food or funds to help FOOD Share provide food for the hungry,” said Bonnie Weigel, CEO of FOOD Share. “We know that when everyone does just a little, great things can be accomplished.”
The Vons one-day food drive was a start to the special push to fill FOOD Share’s shelves in March. FOOD Share is seeking other business and neighborhoods to host drives throughout the month.

About FOOD Share
A major food bank distributing millions of pounds of food each year to those in need throughout Ventura County, FOOD Share collects and receives food year-round and distributes through partner agencies throughout Ventura County.
Churches, pantries, congregate meal sites, senior brown bag programs, USDA distributions, produce outreaches and providing afterschool snacks for school children are just a few of the beneficiaries of FOOD Share’s distribution efforts.
Started in a 2-car garage in 1978 by a few individuals, original founding member Jewel Pedi says the organization was born out of compassion and love for fellow man and today continues its mission – devoted to feeding and nourishing the hungry in Ventura County.
As the economy changes, the hunger need in Ventura County continues to grow, with low-income adults and families, seniors and children most affected. Most people who use FOOD Share services never dreamed they would need to ask for help, let alone ask for the most basic of needs – food.
FOOD Share (foodshare.com) remains proactive in securing nutritious food items to sustain its programs. Every day, dedicated volunteers throughout the entire county give time and talent to help those less fortunate through FOOD Share’s 36,000 sq.-ft. facility in Oxnard, providing food to nearly 40,000 people each month.
