We are proud to announce that Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld of The Ohev Sholom - The National Synagogue has once again chosen Janet Langhart Cohen to portray the brave "Queen Esther, Hadassah" in the 2009 National Purim Parade, Tuesday, March 10th, 2009 at 1:15 pm. Purim is one of the most joyous and fun holidays on the Jewish calendar. As told in the Biblical book of Esther, it commemorates a time when the Jewish people living in Persia were saved from extermination.

It is unprecedented that an individual is chosen a second time for this prestigious role and Mrs. Cohen accepts it with great humility. Preceding last years parade, during an interview with John McCaslin of The Washington Times, Mrs. Cohen, who like her husband was born with Jewish roots, stated that she is "honored to have the opportunity to draw attention to the need for an end to racism and Anti-Semitism in the world." This sentiment remains the same as we enter into a new era with a Black President and the agenda of racism being placed back at the forefront of various agendas.

In addition to her role as "Queen Esther," Mrs. Cohen has been busy with her play entitled, "Anne & Emmett", an imaginary conversation between Anne Frank and Emmett Till with all 2009 productions of the play being held in commemoration of the 80th birthday of Anne Frank. Recently the play was work-shopped and read with Theater J and the Theatre Lab School of Dramatic Arts, and will be presented at the Theatre Lab School's April 2009 Spring Gala. Full production of the play will be done at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) June 10th and June 12th at the Jack Morton Auditorium, George Washington University.
