The new RptDiff Add-in (RptDiff VSS) provides the ability to easily identify and review differences between any two reports, or between two versions of the same report, from within VSS. Using the RptDiff VSS, developers can check-out a report from VSS, make the necessary changes, and once the changes are completed and tested, check the report file back into VSS. With a few clicks, RptDiff VSS will identify all changes which have been made between the original and revised versions of the Crystal Report .RPT files allowing review and confirmation of updates by developers, users, QA teams and system audit teams. RptDiffVSS can also be used to compare VSS copies to local copies not under VSS control.
Microsoft’s Visual SourceSafe is a version control system which lets developers store their project files, along with information about each version or update, allowing the developer to easily compare different versions. Multiple developers can use VSS, and each can check-out a file, make changes and then check-in the tested version. Although VSS was originally designed for text files, it does allow the check-out and check-in of binary files, like the Crystal Reports .RPT files.
Until now, VSS did not provide the ability to view differences between two reports or two versions of a report from within VSS; it could only identify that the reports were either the same or that they differed. The RptDiff VSS Add-in now provides this critical feature and identifies the differences between the files in an easy-to-understand presentation.
RptDiff VSS is based upon the RptDiff utility within the Report Miner Suite (reportminer.com), but is tightly integrated with VSS and cannot be run stand-alone. The Report Miner RptDiff Utility has been providing the Crystal Report file comparison capability for several years, but it required that the user maintain a copy of the .RPT files for each version to be compared; RptDiff VSS takes advantage of the powerful capabilities of Visual SourceSafe in maintaining copies of the reports and the version as well as providing reporting and labeling capabilities and the ability to easily revert back to a prior version of a report.
The RptDiff VSS Add-in requires Microsoft Visual SourceSafe 2005 and supports Crystal Reports versions 3.5-2008. The RptDiff VSS Add-in is available immediately and licensed on a named-user basis. An evaluation copy is available on our website.
