In an ongoing effort to increase awareness concerning the importance of cy pres awards, A.B. Data, Ltd., a leading firm in the class action administration industry, is pleased to announce that Victoria Waciura, Vice President Business Development, has joined the New York State Bar Association’s President’s Committee on Access to Justice.
The President’s Committee on Access to Justice is charged to consider and implement methods for enhancing access by the indigent to the civil legal system. As part of a continuing effort to bridge the gap between the growing numbers of those in need of affordable legal representation and the understaffed agencies charged with the delivery of these services, the Committee embarked on an outreach program to educate attorneys, judges, and class action administration companies about the potential beneficial use of cy pres funds to supplement the inadequate funding of established civil legal services programs. To promote awareness amongst attorneys and to facilitate the conveyance of residual funds to appropriate civil legal services providers, Ms. Waciura was invited to join the Committee.
“Ms. Waciura’s membership on the Committee confirms A.B. Data’s commitment to ensuring that cy pres funds are allocated appropriately and disbursed on a timely basis,” said A.B. Data’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Anya Verkhovskaya. “Cy pres awards to civil legal services programs from the funds remaining after monies have been distributed to all identifiable class members are increasingly being negotiated as part of class action settlements. In turn, A.B. Data is doing its part to ensure prompt disbursement of cy pres awards upon completion of distributions to class members.”
