On Saturday February 21, 2009, artists David Adickes and John Palmer unveiled a revolutionary private art opening at Palmer’s Heights Studio and Gallery, All the President’s Heads. The show featured six unique collaborative pieces, all being Adickes’ white plaster presidential busts infused with Palmer’s dynamic abstract style. Guests’ heads turned to admire Adickes’ twelve foot tall Lincoln sculpture in the gallery’s courtyard, transformed by Palmer with script from the Gettysburg address.
Adickes, b. 1927, and Palmer, b. 1974, are both native Texans who have forged ahead in the world of art. Adickes, most renowned for his massive sculpture of General Sam Houston in Huntsville, Texas, graciously agreed to let Palmer add his unique touch to the stately busts. Palmer, furthering his abstract Escapism style of work, states “Learning from such an accomplished artist as David has injected a new energy into my work.”
Guests to the event included Dr. Carolyn Farb, hc, Dr. and Mrs. Mike Mann and Jan and Christine Spin. Long-time Palmer collector attorney Todd Overstreet remarked on the show, “It’s a rare insight into history made…and history in the making.” All the President’s Heads will remain up and available for private viewings through March 22, 2009.
Palmer and Adickes began collaborating in the wake of Hurricane Ike, when they came together to create a commemorative limited addition series, the proceeds of which went entirely to the American Red Cross Gulf Coast Relief Fund. Since then, the two have become friends and a mutual artistic inspiration. When asked about working with Palmer, Adickes answers “John clearly has Rauschenberg genius for creating ‘shovel-ready gestalt’, that is art which is greater than the sum of its parts.”
