VoiceOverXtra.com, the voice-over industry’s online news, education and resource center, has expanded its calendar section of voice-over training opportunities from coaches, studios and educators across the U.S. and Canada.
“By far, the VoiceOverXtra Calendar is the industry’s largest single reference source to training,” says John Florian, founder and webmaster of VoiceOverXtra.
“Just as a top athlete continues to train to advance and stay in shape, voice actors continue education at all career levels,” Florian explains. “Attending a workshop is also a great way to network with colleagues and informally get new ideas.”
Newcomers to a voice-over career especially need training in a number of aspects, Florian adds. “Newcomers should scan the Calendar for workshop titles like ‘Introduction to Voice-Overs” or “Fundamentals” or “Basics,” at which the instructor will explain how the business works, review performance skills, and talk about things like the critical need for marketing to potential clients.”
Training can also be very specialized, says Florian. For instance, workshops might exclusively deal with the business of voice-overs, self-promotion, performance techniques, home studio recording, and so on.
And, training is offered in a variety of formats, he adds. These include in-person workshops – typically at a recording studio – where participants interact with instructors and also receive personal direction. Many workshops provide ample time at a microphone in a sound booth for practicing voice-over delivery techniques.
Instructors offer workshops and seminars in their hometown studios and also travel throughout North America to reach students elsewhere.
Telecourses, which are group sessions accessed by phone, are growing in popularity, Florian notes.
“A telecourse is certainly an economical and easy way to learn and interact with instructors and other voice actors,” he explains. Typically, one registers for a course and then calls in at a specified time.
The VoiceOverXtra Calendar conveniently displays training by type – workshop, seminar, telecourse, conference, event – and also by month for the following 12 months.
The Calendar is accessed on VoiceOverXtra by clicking on the blue “Calendar” tab at the left side of every web page.
