The WTTC recognizes best practices in sustainable tourism in four different categories - Destination Stewardship, Conservation, Community Benefit and Global Tourism Business.
Finalists were selected for successfully demonstrating sustainable tourism practices, including the protection of natural and cultural heritage, social and economic benefits to local people, and environmentally-friendly operations. An international team of independent judges selected the finalists from a record number of entries received from 40 countries and six continents.
“Our organization is delighted at being chosen as finalists for the prestigious 2009 Tourism for Tomorrow Awards for our long-term efforts in sustainability,” says Richard Edwards, Director of G.A.P Adventures’ Planeterra Foundation. “Sustainable community development and low-impact travel have always been at the core of the way G.A.P Adventures helps travellers see the world and make positive contributions to local people through Planeterra.”
