One of the greatest joys of Music Maker Artists work is traveling with other Music Maker artists to foreign countries, and celebrating in the international language of music.

The 7th Annual Fishin' Blues Tournament kicks off Monday, February 16th at Casa Vieja Lodge in Puerto San José, Guatemala. Bringing the Music Maker blues to the Pacific coast of Guatemela for the very first time will be Atlanta's own Mudcat, Piedmont Blues veteran John Dee Holeman, New Orleans legend Little Freddie King, Sol Creech, and Zeke Hutchins.

During the week these artists will visit a very humble music school in San Jose and local musicians. The live concert has been opened up to the locals of this community. We look forward sharing our most real and rooted blues with new friends.

Below is a personal account from Music Maker Preident, Tim Duffy on discovering the Guatemala School.

"The next afternoon I was driving down several unpaved dusty roads, in the middle of a very humble neighborhood. We came upon a a small cinder block building which had a simple hand painted sign "Musico". There I was introduced to a young Guatemalan who ran a music school. He sat behind the drums, I picked up a guitar and we played several songs. He had all the gear we needed, I arranged to bring him some equipment that his school can use."

Fishin' Blues musical alumni include Dickey Betts, Derek Trucks (of the Allman Brothers), Jimmy Herring (of Widespread Panic), Mudcat, Cool John Ferguson, Lee Gates, Adolphus Bell, Lightnin' Wells, Little Freddie King, Big Ron Hunter, Albert White and more.

This 6-day trip features 3 days of amazing sailfish and marlin angling competition. The billfishing is all catch and release with circle hooks to keep the fish happy and healthy. During this season, 80-100 lb sailfish are plentiful with boats averaging 20-40 bites per day. As an average, while targeting sailfish every Casa Vieja boat will encounter a marlin every third day during the year. These waters are also home to yellow fin tuna and 20-40 lb dorado.

Prizes are awarded for Sportsmanship, Most Sailfish and Biggest Fish. We will fish 2-4 anglers to each expertly captained 37-43 ft. boat, all tackle and fishing gear provided.

All proceeds from Fishin Blues benefit Music Maker Relief Foundation (musicmaker.org), founded by Tim and Denise Duffy in 1994 to provide basic life needs and career support to traditional American musicians living in poverty. To date MMRF has served over 250 musicians through their programs of Musician Sustenance, Musical Development and Cultural Access. Housing, medical services and scores of performances around the world are made possible by MMRF each year, transforming the lives of our American cultural treasures!

Be sure to catch all of the news about the Music Maker Relief Foundation 7th Annual Fishin' Blues Tournament in upcoming Music Maker newsletters.
