Residents of the Charleston Park area in East Lee County will soon gain valuable job skills, thanks to Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida and a Career Development Training grant from Lee County.

The $40,000 grant will allow Goodwill’s employment consultants to provide career assessments and evaluations, along with classes in computer skills, and instruction in online job-hunting. Participants will also receive soft skills training in order to learn resume-writing, interview skills, and how to dress for success. Classes will be offered at the Charleston Park Community Center.

According to a 2006 study performed by the Lee County Department of Human Services, Charleston Park has an overall poverty rate of 18%, and its residents have limited employment opportunities because of low levels of educational attainment. At the time of the study, 64% of men and 43% of women in Charleston Park had not completed high school. Goodwill’s career development training will provide much-needed skills and training for these residents.

Goodwill has also recently received a $66,000 Lee County Partnering for Results grant for employment placement for individuals in Lee County who are 55 or older or who have a physical disability. Those grant monies will be used to continue existing services already provided by Goodwill.

Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida, Inc. helps people with disabilities and other barriers to employment discover and develop their full potential through work and career development services. Nationally, Goodwill Industries is the largest nonprofit provider of career training and placement services in the United States.
