"The South African industrial market for water and wastewater treatment equipment is on a growth trajectory, with an average growth rate of over 8.0 per cent per annum," notes Frost & Sullivan Industrial Analyst Moses Duma. "This robust growth is driven by the increasing governmental pressure on companies to responsibly manage their environment, industrial operations that demand clean and high-quality water, and the general industrial growth of over 5.0 per cent per annum."
Most South African industrial water users have embarked on substantial investments in upgrading and/or expanding their existing water and wastewater treatment equipment as well as on new installations. This opens new market opportunities for servicing already installed equipment, as well as outsourcing of water and wastewater treatment functions.
The move from industrial water users towards water and wastewater treatment is however hampered by the prohibitive costs of equipment. The market is also restrained by the lack of willingness by decision makers to grab new technology, a shortage of skills to operate complex technology and the poor implementation of governmental water legislation.
"The majority of industrial water and wastewater treatment equipment end users are reluctant to use new technology, since they still feel that the equipment is over-priced and too complex to operate," remarks Duma. "Industrial customers are more inclined to deal with suppliers who provide a comprehensive package of customer service that will help them to operate new technology."
