Coming on the heels of being called the “Tickle Me Elmo of the Holiday Season” by the New York Daily News, artist and Brooklyn-based Jailbreak Toys founder Jason Feinberg has announced two, new versions of the popular Obama Action Figure in advance of the upcoming, historic Presidential Inauguration. Dubbed “The Inaugural” and “The HOPE,” only 3,000 numbered versions will be released and are only available for purchase on the Jailbreak Toys website.
The first 500 of the limited-edition figures are available on Tuesday, January 13th. The remainder will be released incrementally. Feinberg’s ‘original” Obama Action Figure will be available in the “Inaugural Zone” at the upcoming Inauguration Ceremony.
The success of the 6” figure with eight-points of articulation has mirrored that of its inspiration. Originally created as a way for Feinberg, known in pop-art circles as J* Rock, to support the then-nominees efforts with one dollar from each piece sold donated to the campaign, the figure has taken on a life of its own. With orders coming in from throughout the world, national media attention from such outlets as People Magazine, The Conan O’Brien Show and The View amongst others and the inclusion in a National Museum of American History collection on Presidential memorabilia, the Obama Action Figure has become one of the most coveted items among the thousands of collectibles spawned by the President-Elect’s dramatic rise to power.
Numbered and packaged in a window box with original illustrations, “The Inaugural” Obama Action Figure captures the auspicious moment in history with its gold painted suit while the “HOPE” figure draws its inspiration from the acclaimed screenprint of the same name by acclaimed artist Shepard Fairey who has also endorsed the figure. Recently seen on the cover of Time Magazine with the announcement of Barack Obama as “Person of the Year,” Fairey’s illustration captured the imagination of millions and lends itself perfectly to the figure as an optimistic reminder of “Yes We Can.”
“I came up with the idea to create the figure before the first Democratic Primaries,” said Feinberg whose first limited-edition is now fetching up to seven times the retail price on eBay. “There was more than excitement surrounding Obama’s campaign, there was engagement and I wanted to find a way to support his message.”
Departing from his signature line of 3”, vinyl collectibles representing historical icons from the world of art, politics and literature, Feinberg connected Obama’s rise to that of a super hero coming in to save the day. “An action figure was a natural fit,” he said adding, “But I had no idea it would resonate the way it has. I was even told that Michelle Obama has one. I can just imagine the fun the kids are having with it.”
Jailbreak Toys president Jason Feinberg is currently available for interview to discuss the immediate success of the Obama Action Figure as well as the entire Jailbreak Toys line.
