The Pharmacy Group of BITS, Pilani is one of the few early schools of Pharmacy in India. Established in 1950, under the able leadership of (Late) Prof. M. L. Schroff, Father of Pharmacy Education in India, it has blossomed into one of the most sought after Schools of Pharmacy in India.
For this year, the lecture was held on Friday 09 January 2009 in the Lecture Theatre Complex of BITS Pilani. The function started with welcome address by Dr R Mahesh Pharmacy Group Leader, BITS Pilani after which Dr L K Maheshwari Vice Chancellor BITS Pilani gave a profile of Prof B M Mithal highlighting his contributions in making BITS Pilani as one among the top ranking universities in India today.
Dr R N Saha Dean Educational Development Division BITS Pilani introduced the speaker for the day Dr S K Kulkarni who is a distinguished professor of Pharmacology from University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Punjab University, Chandigarh.
Prof Kulkarni has been one among the top ten scientists list in India which include names to reckon with such as Dr C N R Rao, Dr G R Desiraju, Dr J S Yadav, Dr G Mehta etc. He has more than three decades of teaching and research experience which include Psychoneuro pharmacology, GABA / Benzodiazepine receptor pharmacology, stress, neurosteroids and epilepsy movement disorders, pain and inflammation, development of herbal psychotropics etc.
In his lecture, Prof Kulkarni focused on the Issues and Challenges pertaining to discovering drugs from Natural Sources and highlighted the fact that India is undoubtedly a destination for Pharmacy and Clinical Research. He also explained in detail the mechanism based discovery of CNS active drugs from natural sources.
The lecture ended with the award of B M Mithal Memorial Gold Medal for best B.Pharm student for the year 2007 to Nageswari and for 2008 to Sriharita. The CVNHB Gupta Memorial Gold Medal for best M Pharm student was bagged by Lajvinder Kumar for 2007 and Varun Jain for 2008.
