In an economic recession or depression, the focus of individuals becomes extremely focused on short term cash conservation. And, typically, environmental concerns and activities of individual take a back seat to this conserving cash.
It does not have to be this way, according to Dan Powell of the home renovation and energy conservation web site DailyHomeRenoTips.com: "Reducing the consumption of non-renewable energy resources in the home produces immediate reductions in the home's utility bills, regardless of the it's size, age or location."
The Un-Official Guide to Home Energy Conservation (the 'Guide') was produced to help individuals who live in houses, apartments, condominiums, etc. who pay for electricity and heating utility bills. It was developed through the contributions from hundreds of individuals throughout North America who submitted the different ways in which they conserve energy in their homes.
In all there are more than 240 different energy conservation activities contained in the Guide which can be used in the home, of which 106 cost absolutely nothing to do while a further 74 cost very little.
The Guide is simple. It organizes the hundreds of home energy consumption reduction ideas into different areas of focus including heating (53 energy consumption reduction activities), heating & cooling (38), electricity (70), cooking (21), water heating (22) and cooling (23).
The Un-Official Guide to Home Energy Conservation gets right to the point. It first lists the 106 energy conservation steps which cost absolutely nothing to do, grouped by the different energy reduction categories, followed by the 74 which cost very little to do, again grouped by the different categories, and so on.
Why is the Guide being made available free of charge? According to Powell, "Conserving energy inside the home is not sexy, does not receive much publicity from politicians at any level nor from the national media. When was the last time you turned on the TV and saw a nationally syndicated talk show focus on home energy conservation? The national and international media would rather focus on the latest and greatest weight loss program or the newest political scandal.
"However, home energy conservation is the one thing that is totally within the control of the individual. And, by reducing the amount of electricity, home heating oil, natural gas, etc. consumed in the home, the related utility bills will immediately go down month after month after month after month. The reduced utility bills directly save the individual money, after-tax money at that, month after month after month after month which can be used to pay the mortgage, purchase food, etc."
The Guide (DailyHomeRenoTips.com) can also be used in primary and secondary schools to teach children the many different ways to conserve energy that they can then bring back to their parents and start using in their own homes. Throughout the school term teachers can develop a running project where the students make their own charts to track which of the energy conservation ideas they see in being done in their own home; they can chart the progress they see being made by their parents, grandparents, sisters and brothers in using the different suggestions contained therein. One month can see the focus on home heating suggestions contained in the Guide, while the next month can see the focus change to electricity consumption reduction ideas, and so on. The end of term assignment can be to collect and report on the progress made in the student's home in using the many different home energy conservation suggestions contained in the Guide, and even to come up with additional measures which are not included in the guide but were used in the student's own home.
