The 2008 Frost & Sullivan European Excellence in Research of the Year Award in the field of tactical communication systems is presented to Norway-based Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace for its proven research in this domain, which has resulted in several innovative technologies being used in its products such as the TacLan system.
"Kongsberg has, through its exhaustive research efforts, been able to incorporate novel and competitive features in its tactical communication systems, catering to the evolving demands of its customers," notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Anirudh Srinivasan. "With intellectual property and expert knowledge in the tactical and secure communications domain, Kongsberg has capitalised on indigenous research and development to stay ahead in the industry."
Successive innovations in varied segments such as radio relaying, communication switching, and broadband Internet protocol (IP) radio communications, have been bolstered by its proven capability in transferring large volumes of data for military use in its new generation of wireless radio communication equipment launched last year. One of Kongsberg's most successful research outcomes has been with the TacLan, which achieved data rates as high as 2.5 Mbps, even as several tactical radio communication systems in Europe were unable to go beyond 400 kbps.
"Another significant research achievement for Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace has been its success in implementing a number of parallel voice connections simultaneously, making it possible for an entire platoon to operate on the same network," states Anirudh Srinivasan. "This means that soldiers and commanders can carry just a single radio, thereby reducing the load carried and increasing the efficiency of command and control."
Leveraging its research capabilities in areas such as ad-hoc networking, IP-based networking and combining them with its expertise in radio relays and switching, the Kongsberg Defence Communication division has remained on the leading edge of technology, while offering advanced tactical communication products. Several defence establishments, besides the Norwegian Armed Forces, have adopted Kongsberg's tactical communication solutions including soldier modernisation programmes, such as the Swiss Army's Integrated and Modular Engagement System for the Swiss Soldier (IMESS). In addition, the Canadian Land Forces Command and NATO countries count among Kongsberg's prominent international customers.
"With network-centric warfare (NCW) becoming a widely applied concept, Kongsberg has moved to build up its research expertise in this area and increase its competitiveness," concludes Anirudh Srinivasan. "Some of its recent products such as the TacLAN system already boast of all the basic networking functionality required for a fundamental IP-based NCW scenario."
