The ShadeMaid is a sturdy, yet lightweight umbrella support system designed to fit in any two inch receiver. The ShadeMaid was designed and created by Chuck Caro of Wichita Kansas, president of Alcon & Associates. The idea came to him while attending sporting events and coaching baseball. He said that he spent a lot of time outside and no one ever had any shade. When asked where the inspiration came from, Chuck said “Everybody needed shade. I saw tents and things like that, but none of them could be mounted to asphalt. As I was looking around, everybody had two inch receivers, even on cars, so I thought you know what, this could be an idea. Let’s try putting an umbrella in a two inch receiver hitch.” Thus the ShadeMaid was born.
Chuck began the process in the mid 1990’s. Originally, the ShadeMaid was constructed of steel and weighed in at approximately 50 pounds. The obvious need for shade was not the only inspiration in the invention of this product. As a lifetime ambition, Chuck has always had the drive to have a patent of his own. This drive helped him to pursue the ShadeMaid concept, as well as additional products that he is currently patenting. Those will be available in the near future.
With a few changes to the original prototype, the ShadeMaid (shademaid.com) is now ready for the market. Built from anodized aircraft aluminum, the ShadeMaid is light enough at five pounds for anyone to assemble, yet durable enough to withstand the elements of nature. Each support system comes with a carrying case.
The ShadeMaid support system will hold most patio and market style umbrellas. In addition to the ShadeMaid support system, Iron Horse of Kansas also offers select umbrellas for purchase.
