Elemental Designs in Newton, Iowa is headed in a unique direction within the home theater market a decidedly green direction. By taking the time to look at the foot print their products leave on the environment Elemental Designs has decided to move a large majority of their products produced in house in an environmentally friendly direction.

"We really looked at the impact the industry standard building material MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard), with added urea-formaldehyde and a few other carcinogens and really decided it's time to make a move to a new material. What we've found is a material that is remarkably green! In fact it contains no added urea-formaldehyde, it is made from wood that is not suitable for construction in its original form, offers us more peace of mind for the environment, and is safer for our employees working with it as well," said Ben Milne owner of Elemental Designs.

The impact of moving away from MDF to a more environmentally friendly material is an idea that may soon take hold throughout the home audio industry. This green push will also be assisted by the California Compliance Laws that will soon limit the amount of formaldehyde found in building materials moving forward from 2009. "It was definitely a move we wanted to make, but until we made steps internally to offset the cost it didn't seem plausible without a substantial increase in price to our customers. So we went to the drawing board and made a plan to increase efficiency inside of the company, allowing us to absorb the cost of going green without impacting our customers," said Mr. Milne.

Mr. Milne feels that green materials are soon to have an even larger impact in the audio world moving forward in 2009.

"It's definitely important to us to be one of the first to make the move to a green material. Especially considering that MDF is the raw material that as a manufacturer of cabinets and enclosures in car audio, home theater, and pro audio we use more than any other resource. So we are definitely at a great starting point; and even though we are a smaller manufacturer it feels good to know we are having less of an impact on the environment, and hopefully leading the way for others to follow."
