While the economy is heading south and people are losing their jobs, the animation industry is growing. Job Satisfaction:

• 60% of animators are happy in their jobs – that’s only second to clergy;
• More than 80% plan to continue working in this field;
• More than half recommend a career in animation to friends and family;
• One in five animators have a mentor at work.

The Earnings Outlook for Animators is Bright
• In 2007, more than half of the animators surveyed (51 percent) made $40,000, and 35 percent earned between $40,000 and $80,000 annually.
• In 2008, the outlook brightened in terms of total earnings with less than 30 percent earning less than $40,000, and the majority of respondents (51 percent) earning between $40,000 and $80,000.
• The survey results also showed a growth in the upper earnings ranges with 4 percent more expecting to earn between $80,000-$100,000 than they did in 2007, and 9 percent expecting to earn more than $100,000 versus 7 percent in that category in 2007.

Top Ways the Industry is Changing
• The top three trends include: the rise of motion capture; the trend toward outsourcing and cost-cutting; and that unbelievably fast advances in technology will impact the way animation is created. According to the professional animators we surveyed, following are a few of the responses we received about these trends.

• “I work in games and very soon things like hands, fingers, and feet will no longer need to be hand-animated because of the advances in motion caption. This will leave the animators free to spend their time on the things that actually matter, like pushing the performance and expressions.”

• According to another respondent, “digital storyboarding and posing will allow more freelance opportunities from decentralized locations as fast Internet access becomes ubiquitous.”

• “I see us doing less with bells and whistles just because we can and more looking back at what has gone before to inspire and grow modern methods. Hopefully the novelty of what can be achieved will mature into something a little more restrained.”

Opportunities Abound
• Opportunities abound in character animation, computer graphics, special effects, motion capture, 2D and 3D animation;
• Yahoo! Careers recently posted that animators was one of the top 20 growing careers;
• More than half of the top 20 grossing movies for 2007 were partially or totally animated;
• Earlier in the year, industry analysts were worried about the 2008 outlook but with hit movies such as The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Kung-Fu Panda and Wall-E, 2008 is on track to match or surpass 2007 numbers;
• Animation is growing not just in films but in advertising, gaming and TV. Consider that Fox’s Sunday night line-up relies completely on animated shows.

Animation Mentor had a third party firm, Knowledge Wave International, conduct a survey of professional animators to discover career satisfaction, salaries, and keys to a successful career for animators.

Our founders, mentors, and students would love to discuss the results of salary growth in the industry, the role mentors play in a successful career, trends that excite and scare animators, and the satisfaction level of animators with you.
