PROFILE: A Film That Will Make You Think
Racial profiling: a subject we’re all familiar with, especially in this post-9/11 era. But what if the tables were turned and the person being profiled was not a male of Middle Eastern decent, but was a thirty-something white female? Anyone could be a terrorist. This is the idea behind PROFILE, the locally-shot, documentary-style film now playing at the Olde Mystick Village Art Cinemas in Mystic. Director, Hans Hartman, spent several years struggling with the idea of trying to capture the spirit of this period in our history and make a film that would tell such a story. He succeeded big time.
The film PROFILE is powerful and very disturbing; not for the faint of heart. Nothing is glamorized in PROFILE; the people or the situations. The interrogation methods are actual techniques currently implemented throughout the world, like the ones reported on the evening news. PROFILE had an initial market screening at Quinnipiac University with an audience comprised of academics and fellow filmmakers. The reaction to the film was that it was “very real,” and for some, “almost too real of an experience.” Hartman did not let the actors meet ahead of time. They experienced the situations as they unfolded during the shooting, adding to the realism.
The cast of PROFILE included six talented actors: Bill Buell, Joseph D'Amico, Amber Kelly, Aaron Lathrop, Elijah Manning and Sheryl Moller. Bill Buell is an indie scene favorite whose credits include a memorable turn as Mr. Wiener in Welcome to The Dollhouse and other festival favorites such as Requiem for a Dream, Kinsey, Dark Water, and Across the Universe. He has also been in two heavyweight miniseries over the past few years: First, as Art Fowler in The Bronx is Burning, and most recently as Justice Lynde in John Adams for HBO. It was on the set of The Bronx is Burning, which was filmed in New London, CT, that Buell met director Hans Hartman, who was working on the miniseries as well. Aaron Lathrop has a local following in the New London community due to his involvement with the Flock Theatre and The O'Neill Puppetry Conference. Amber Kelly is a New York City actress and the force behind Theater of Thought in Narrangansett. Amber's role in PROFILE has already been hailed, by both critics and audiences, as one of the "must see" performances by an actress. Sheryl Moller rounds out the principal cast in a role that showcases her experience as a reputable and familiar actress on the New York stage.
Hans Hartman, Timothy Londregan, and Joseph Cullen bring their combined 40-plus years of filmmaking experience to the production of PROFILE. This is their first collaborative effort as Mystic Media Partners, and they look forward to working together on many more productions in the future.
