KMA Architecture & Engineering has announced the addition of two seasoned professionals to its award-winning team. Heather Mertes, who has more than 13 years of design and construction management experience, has joined KMA as a project manager and Jay Janda, with more than four years in various areas of the industry, has been hired as an architectural designer.
Mertes, who will be working on mixed-use high rise projects, has spent her career specializing in project development, from site selection to design, contracts, permitting construction documents and administration. Previously, she worked with two of Seattle’s top design firms, 2008 Gold Nugget Award of Merit winner GGLO, LLC and CDA+ Pirscher Architects, Inc. Her portfolio includes the Dublin Transit Center in Dublin, California, as well as such mixed use projects as the Mission Bay North (Phase II) in San Francisco, Alderwood Parkway Retail Complex and The Pavilion Cinema and Retail Shops in Stanwood, Wash. Mertes earned her bachelor of arts degree in architectural studies at the University of Washington after attending the University of California at San Diego.
With over four years of experience in all phases of architecture, from schematic design through construction administration, Janda’s work at KMA will begin with the El Cajon Public Safety Center, a state-of-the-art, 284,515 square-foot, five-level police facility with associated improvements located in the city’s Civic Center area. Prior to KMA, he worked as a project manager at the San Diego firm of Martinez + Cutri Architects, where his work in mixed use projects included Pier, Citiplace and the proposed multifaceted Navy Broadway Complex. Janda earned a master of architecture degree from the University of Oregon and a bachelor of science degree at Arizona State University.
“We are excited to add the diverse experience that Heather and Jay will contribute to our team at KMA. It is our hope that their contributions will play a role in KMA’s continued growth and success,” said Don Blair, president of KMA.
Headquartered in San Diego, KMA has provided integrated architectural, engineering and planning services throughout Southern California and the Western United States since 1973.
