Clerkenwell, London, United Kingdom, 2008/07/03 - Cath Kidston has designed a stunning range of collectable, re-usable shopping bags. The fabric of the bags is made entirely of recycled plastic (PET) bottles and they are available exclusively in larger Tesco stores - Tesco.com.

The purpose of the new range of bags is to increase awareness of and change consumer dependency on the use of single-use plastic bags, while raising money for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
The Unique Selling Point of the bag, from an ecological point of view, is that it is made of a waste material, therefore diverting waste from landfill and avoiding the extraction and processing of raw materials.
Tesco is committed to reducing the number of single-use plastic bags used and has given out 1.5 billion fewer bags since launching Green Clubcard Points in August 2006.
In addition, the funds raised from the sale of the bags will be donated to Marie Curie Cancer Care, Tesco Charity of the Year 2008. A minimum of £250,000 will be raised, funding an additional 12,500 hours of nursing care at home for terminally ill patients and their families throughout the UK. Neither Tesco nor Cath Kidston are profiting at all from the sale of the bags.
The first two designs of the collection – the ‘multi floral fashion’ print and the ‘classic blue spot’ print - will be launched in July 2008. Four more classic prints will then hit the shelves over a six-month period.

Information on the bag
Neither Tesco, nor Cath Kidston are profiting at all from the sale of these bags. They will retail at £3.50, with 50p from each purchase going to Marie Curie Cancer Care. A minimum of £250,000 will be raised for Marie Curie Cancer Care to fund an additional 125,000 hours of home nursing care for terminally ill patients and their families in communities throughout the UK.
Marie Curie Cancer Care
Devoted Marie Curie Nurses make it possible for terminally ill patients to be cared for at home, with the people who matter to them most Marie Curie Cancer Care is taking the lead in end of life care and believes every terminally ill patient should have the choice to be cared for in the comfortable and familiar surroundings of their own home.
Only 3 in 100 people would choose to die in hospital but this is the reality for half of all cancer patients.
Tesco Charity of the Year
Marie Curie Cancer Care is the Tesco Charity of the Year 2008.
Since 1988, Tesco has chosen a different charity every year to be the focus for staff fundraising. The Tesco Charity Trust then adds 20% to all staff fundraising.
The Tesco and Marie Curie Cancer Care Charity of the Year partnership is called ‘Providing more nursing care at home’.
Tesco and Marie Curie Cancer Care hope to raise £2.5million to fund an additional 125,000 hours of nursing care for patients and their families throughout the UK.
Your local Tesco store will be fundraising throughout 2008 – get involved and help them meet their goals.
Cath Kidston
Cath Kidston Ltd was founded in 1993 when designer Cath Kidston opened a tiny shop in London’s Holland Park. She began by selling the vintage fabrics, wallpapers and brightly-painted junk furniture she remembered fondly from her childhood. Her clever, witty re-working of traditional English country house style meant that her shop soon became a cult success.
Gradually Cath began to design her own prints and products. One of the first was a printed ironing board cover – practical, quirky and with a distinctive floral print; it came to epitomize the Cath Kidston look. The product base has expanded steadily to include fashion, kids, and an extensive range of homewares. Over the years Cath’s high-profile collaborations have included creating tents with Milletts and Nokia mobile phones with Carphone Warehouse.
The business has expanded steadily to become the unique global lifestyle brand it is today. It now encompasses some 20 shops and concessions in the UK and three stores in Japan. More store openings are planned for 2008, and the successful worldwide mail order and wholesale divisions continue to grow. Cath Kidston Ltd is one of the most influential and original design companies to emerge from the UK in recent years and celebrates its’ 15th Birthday this year.
