Invest in Photonics, the first international photonics partnering event, will be held in Bordeaux (in south-western France) from 11 to 12 December 2008. The event will bring together 150 international experts to present a comprehensive overview of this fast-developing industry. There will also be meetings between SMEs and potential investors and manufacturers.
All the major French and European photonics players are involved in Invest in Photonics, which will be held at the Regent Grand Hotel Bordeaux, in the heart of the city. Invest in Photonics is being initiated by the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the CEA (French Atomic Energy Commission) and the ALPhA Route des Lasers cluster.
Invest in Photonics will focus on three key themes. Business Time will give the representatives of SMEs a chance to meet potential investors in a series of 10-minute meetings. If these short meetings are successful, longer meetings can then be arranged to study projects in more depth. Market Time will enable participants to find out about market trends through conferences and round tables with leading experts in the field. These events will cover economic, institutional and technological developments. Finally, Innovation Time will facilitate meetings and presentations, through photonics-related technological workshops and company on-site visits.
The photonics market is experiencing significant growth – its value is currently estimated at $800 billion, and it is growing by 7% each year. Photonics has numerous applications in various sectors, including flat-screen technology and cameras integrated into mobile phones. Invest in Photonics will be playing a major part in the search for capital investment for companies interested in developing photonics applications.
The website for the event allows interested participants to register to attend. It can also be used to register calls for projects in relation to entrepreneurs who are seeking development funding. The deadline for the call for tender is 30 June 2008.
About Invest in Photonics
Invest in Photonics (invest-in-photonics.com) will be held from 11 to 12 December 2008 at the Regent Grand Hotel in Bordeaux (in south-western France). It is being initiated by the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the CEA (French Atomic Energy Commission) and the ALPhA Route des Lasers cluster, with financial support from the European Union, the French Government, the Regional Council of Aquitaine, the County Council of Gironde, the Bordeaux Urban Community, and the Bordeaux municipal authority. It is also being organised in collaboration with CNOP (the French National Optics and Photonics Committee), EPIC (European Photonic Industry Consortium) and Finance & Technologie (a French association that promotes investment in innovative projects).
About Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce and Industry
The Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce and Industry represents the 44,000 companies based within its constituency. It has three main roles: to assist companies in their development; to represent companies before the authorities; and, finally, to develop further the economy of Bordeaux and the surrounding region.
About CEA and CESTA
The Commissariat à l'énergie atomique (Atomic Energy Commission / CEA) is driving the development of the optics and photonics sector in the Bordeaux region through its Centre d'études scientifiques et techniques d'Aquitaine (Aquitaine Centre for Scientific and Technical Studies / CESTA), which was established in 1965 in Barp (near Bordeaux).
CEA’s primary role is to guarantee the industrial architecture supporting French nuclear-deterrent warheads. It is also constructing a Megajoule Laser (LMJ) – the only one of its kind in the world. With LMJ, CESTA will have exceptional R&D equipment that will also be made available to the wider scientific community. This equipment will provide an opportunity for new industrial growth in the region in the laser and optics sectors.
About ALPhA Route des Lasers
ALPhA (Aquitaine Lasers Photonics and Applications) runs the Route des Lasers® competitiveness cluster. The cluster is based on the Megajoule Laser project, which is being developed by CEA, as well as on R&D in the optics and photonics sector across the Aquitaine region of south-western France.
