Downtown residents and stakeholders will soon have a chance to hear what their future leaders plan to do to shape the future of Austin. The Downtown Austin Neighborhood Association (DANA) is hosting a City Council candidate forum Wednesday, April 23, 2008. The forum will take place at the Austin Club between 6:30 and 9 pm.

During the forum, a moderator will allow each of the candidates to make an opening statement. Following the candidates’ opening statements, panelists will ask questions on such issues as transportation, residential density, park vitality, affordable housing, noise disturbances, and historic preservation.

“The candidate forum is an example of how DANA gives a voice to downtown residents and enables them to learn about the issues that affect them,” says Marshall Jones, DANA’s president.

After the question and answer sessions with the candidates, DANA members will have a chance to make endorsements.

The Austin Club is located at 110 E. 9th Street, between Congress and Brazos. Participants and attendees can plan their visit on public transportation using Capital Metro’s trip planner at capmetro.org. Alternatively, the club will validate parking at the garage directly to the east on 9th Street.

“We feel the urban core is vital to the economic, cultural, and ecological health of the city,” says Jones, “so we are pleased the candidates have agreed to engage the residents of our neighborhood.”

DANA will provide food and refreshments during the event.

DANA’s mission is to improve the quality of life for those who live, work and play downtown. DANA influences decisions that affect downtown, educates and listens to residents and stakeholders, and fosters a downtown community.
