Growing awareness about the hazardous nature of mercury and the European Commission's (EC's) proposal to ensure the absence of toxic substances in the manufacturing process of medical devices are expected to ensure the growth of the underdeveloped Eastern European temperature monitoring devices market. The EC's proposal to ban the use of mercury in household thermometers will increase the sale of non-mercury thermometers, especially digital thermometers.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (patientmonitoring.frost.com), Eastern European Temperature Monitoring Devices Markets, finds that the market earned revenues of $31.0 million in 2007 and estimates this to reach $49.0 million in 2012.

Upon receipt of the above information, an overview will be sent to you by email.

"Unlike in Western Europe, traditional mercury thermometers are still used on a large scale in Eastern European countries," notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Smruti Munshi. "Given this, the EC's proposal to ban mercury in household thermometers is likely to pave the way for a transition from mercury to digital thermometers, which are also more accurate and user friendly."

Non-mercury glass thermometers, which make use of a non-toxic substitute called Gallinstan, also have the opportunity to enter the market, as analog thermometers have been used traditionally for many years. Moreover, they are accurate and provide a cheap alternative to digital thermometers. Solar-powered thermometers are another eco-friendly choice that might gain market penetration in the future.

However, the Eastern European market for temperature monitoring devices is extremely price sensitive, and with a wide variety of products available, there is intense competition amongst manufacturers. Furthermore, growing competition from Chinese and Asian manufacturers has pressured the leading brands to reduce prices.

"Customers in Eastern Europe prefer to pay less and buy the more familiar digital thermometer rather than spending five times more on the infrared thermometer," says Munshi. "This trend has marginalized the penetration of technologically advanced and expensive products in this region."

To overcome these challenges, market participants should establish practical price structures, set up efficient trade structures and distribution channels and undertake effective marketing and promotion strategies. The most common way to promote a product in the Eastern European market is to invest in a private distributor who understands the nuances of the local market and hence, can work closely with the company to develop a tailor-made strategy.
