We talk to Mr. Ramirez, founder of Gallera Music (promotions and marketing Co.) to learn about the forces behind the music scene and the independent movement.
Interviewer: How do you feel about showcasing in the local Cleveland market?
Gallera: The economy in this state is taking a dip, business owners are not meeting requirements to stay in business and clubs, venues, and promoters can’t afford to pay the artist properly as I have witness myself. Here is were local bands and artist go wrong about the music business aspect in which they participate. Bands without representation start to offer their services at no cost to promoters or at very low wages. While the artists are not making enough money to cover their expenses other aspects in the business are getting a pay out. To answer your question, I feel very disappointed on how the local scene is handling this matter. If the promoters are not making their earns why punished the artist who’s trying to make a decent living out of selling his music.
Interviewer: How was Gallera Music established?
Gallera: Gallera Music was born in spring, 2005 when I first started attending college classes about the music business. At that point it was not an actual business put rather a list of unorganized ideas. I wanted to do everything in the record industry; performed , record, produces, promote, anything, you named it, I though of it. The question was how was I going to established myself to actually differ from the rest of the mob trying to make it in this industry. Well, after trying to find partners in the local scene I got tired of rejection. It seemed to others like if I was not good enough to be worthy to form part of their organization or whatever they had at the time. That rejection became the force behind starting the company and not only a record company put a marketing company. Off course it took two years to get to this level, in June 2007 I open Gallera Music, LLC., and that December released our first record. The record did not worked as I expected put the learning experience was very rewarding. Now a days we are more careful with our plans and will try different avenues to achieve success.
Interviewer: What motivates you to be a part of the music business?
Gallera: Since I can remember, my love for the music and the creative art behind the music has been a motivation. In the past 9 months many outcomes have change that view. I still love the music, however I feel that other aspect of the industry are taken for granted.
Interviewer: How do you maintain focus on your goals?
Gallera: At times, I am aggressive to accomplish my goals, a bit stubborn, specially with the people I consider my staff. If I don’t like something, I must face the problem. If we agreed we continue working, if it becomes a problem then let’s cut all thighed ends and start a new project. Sometimes this could be very difficult to do because of all the time spent on a project, put very effective in the matter that I’m keeping myself protected from future misunderstandings and/or legal cases.
Interviewer: What can we expect from Gallera Music for the 2008 calendar?
Gallera: We have plans to work with local promoting companies in the Latin community for showcasing. We are planning to go national/international with our showcasing events by booking outside talent from different regions. We will be recording demo projects for Andy Jamil under the urban reggaeton genre. Also, the young talent goes solo as a Bachata artist later in this year. Demo projects will be released next year for the Bachata demo project. We start a project working with various Reggaetoneros for "Epulando la Zona" compilation CD. We continue our public relations with Tu casa Entertainment. We also are going to be commencing an advertising campaign across the Midwest and eastern coast for bookings. Were are booking tropical bands for our showcase tours in the Midwest. All latin genres welcome for showcasing from different locations as the market opportunities become available. Plus whatever else comes, we will be ready.
Closing Remarks;
The record industry as we know has been changing over the past few years based on the digital music era movement and because of individuals like Juan Ramirez who have established businesses that dwell in the independent market using that digital concept to their advantage. Gallera Music, LLC is one of the few latin record companies in the midwest making changes in the record industry and are among the many Latinos on the rise.
