Unsigned band, Gaucho, have been announced as the winner of the COLGATE MAX FRESH and E-Music Television unsigned competition, resulting in the band winning an exclusive recording session at the world famous Abbey Road Studios in London.
The competition was open to all unsigned music acts in the UK, who had to submit a track online at emusic.tv. Fans were asked to vote for their favourite acts, and the ten most popular were played before an industry music panel which included Dan Gillespie, lead singer of The Feeling, and Jo Charrington, Head of A&R at SonyBMG, Epic Records. Gaucho successfully impressed the judges and were named as the overall winner.
“When listening to any new music or demo the first thing I ask is, is it a good song? I was very impressed with the level of song writing produced throughout the competition,” said Jo Charrington.
Gaucho won the competition with their lead track ‘Well Remembered’. The band, Marcus Shaw (lead vocals), Mark Lodge (guitar), Jason Ellis (bass and backing vocals) and Chris Barnacoat (drums) come from Retford, Nottinghamshire, and have been together for three years. Their music is a fusion of rock and funky beats that powerfully connect emotionally to the listeners. They have developed a unique sound that remains interesting and relevant to today’s music scene.
“It’s fantastic, but a total shock,” said Chris. “You have to have some hope when you enter these types of competitions but you never have any idea of the level of talent or simply the amount of acts you’re up against.”
Gaucho has won a 12-hour recording session, working with an engineer at the famous Abbey Road Studios. They will be given a master copy and CD from their session that will help them advance their music career.
CEO of E-Music Television, Vince Monsey said, “When knocking on the door of the music industry, having a track which has been fully produced at Abbey Road Studios is a huge advantage and of enormous value. The Abbey Road experience will be something that the winning group will always remember. I wish Gaucho every success with their future career.”
Chris from Gaucho added, “It will be a great honour to record one of our own songs in such a prestigious studio as Abbey Road. There is so much history and character to the place, we’re definitely looking forwards to becoming part of its history. It will also be interesting to see what the engineers make of our own work and to hear what the final product will sound like.”
Andrew Brown, UK Brand Manager of Colgate Max Fresh commented, “This competition is all about fresh new talent and we believe this is what Gaucho can bring to today’s music scene. We have worked with numerous people in the music industry and a lot of thought has gone into choosing the winner, who we hope will go on to have a very successful future.”
The future is looking encouraging for Gaucho. Chris explains the struggle they have had not coming from a city, “Trying to get into cities for a small town band is such a hard effort. If you don’t have a local following to that city they won’t let you play, but then how can you build up a following if no-one can hear your music? Let’s hope this competition gives bands from small towns the belief that it’s not just the big city bands that can make it!”
