Henderson, NV, United States, 2008/01/26 - Boxing Illustrated, the venerable boxing magazine that was revived last year by Colliers Media, a Margate Entertainment Company, has named former boxer, manager, and promoter Sterling McPherson as its new editor.
Serling McPherson, the Ohio native who parlayed a stellar pro boxing career into stints as a boxing manager and then a boxing promoter, has been named editor of the historic Boxing Illustrated Magazine.
McPherson was a light welterweight who compiled a 17-4-1 record with 14 KOs from 1979-1987. He was a regular fighter in Las Vegas at both the Silver Slipper and Caesars Palace.
Moving into the management arena, McPherson began as an assistant to Don King, then stepped out on his own and guided the meteoric rise of both Francois Botha and Michael Dokes before again moving on to become a boxing promoter with Sterling Productions in Las Vegas. He recently was promoting the Mike Tyson World Tour before it was derailed by Tyson's most recent brush with the law.
"We are delighted to be able to attract a boxing executive with the background of Sterling McPherson," aid Colliers Media Publisher Tom Ficara. "There's no substitute for actually having been a boxer, manager, and promoter for being able to give the fight fan the real story. For too long there have been pretenders who profess to know boxing but were really advertising or newspaper guys. Sterling is the real deal. He's been in the heat of battle "
McPherson will provide editorial and commentary on boxing both in the Boxing Illustrated.Net E Magazine and in the hard cover Boxing Illustrated Magazine.
"I am delighted to be a contributor to such a historic magazine as Boxing Illustrated," said McPherson. "I will honor and cherish the position and make sure that I use it to make sure that the real fight fans will know whats really happening in the world of boxing."
McPherson will also take over the Boxing Illustrated Radio Show, currently a part of the Coast to Coast From Las Vegas Radio show on Sports Byline USA Network, but soon to be its own independent show.
McPherson also takes over the Boxing Illustrated DVD series, which will include the greatest fights from the Boxing Illustrated video library. Many of these fights can be seen on the Classic Sports channel of TV4U.Com
"I am going to personally supervise the selection of the very best fights from the past century to create a boxing DVD series for the serious boxing fan.," McPherson concluded.
