Executive producer and NAACP Theatre Award nominee Yetta Young, put together award winning casts in each city consisting of such notables as: Star Jones, Sherri Shepherd, Vanessa Williams, Terri J. Vaughn, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Dawnn Lewis, Gloria Mayfield Banks, Ella Joyce, Taj Johnson George, Karen Malina White and Coko just to name a few. All coming together in an effort to combat a serious epidemic, which continues to cripple communities nationwide; Domestic Violence.
Taj Johnson George, member of the R&B group SWV stated, “This will be my first experience acting; however I'm both excited and nervous. Standing against domestic violence is a cause that is near and dear to my heart. I've been in an abusive relationship, so this is very personal to me. I spend a great deal of time speaking to women in shelters on behalf of my own foundation. I encourage women to pull strength from within, and love themselves. The fact is I relate to their situations, ‘I am the woman’ who has survived domestic violence.”
“The Vagina Monologues” is a powerful stage play that inspires female empowerment and inner-strength. Comprised of witty dialogue, the performances are full of emotional scenes that will make audiences laugh, cry, and most importantly think. Heightened awareness of the impact violence against women and children is having on our communities is brought to the forefront, in this unforgettable presentation.
“It is always such a pleasure to come together with other powerful women for the experience of V-Day. It's always Hot, Empowering and Enlightening! I can't wait!” said Terri J. Vaughn.
"YYP is happy to partner with Ashley Carroll of Exclusive Entertainment Production Group on our first Vagina Monologues Tour. I am also excited to be joining playwright Eve Ensler and V-Day, once again, on this global movement to end violence against women and girls," says Executive Producer and Director Yetta Young. "In the 6 years that I’ve produced and/or directed this piece I’ve never gotten bored. YYP was blessed to be the first to produce “The Vagina Monologues” with an all African-American celebrity cast in hopes of bringing out a more diverse audience, which I noticed was missing in our community. In 2002, we started out with Mo’Nique, Ella Joyce, Vanessa Bell Calloway and Wendy Raquel Robinson. In 2008 we have over 22 celebrities joining our tour, all in honor of celebrating and raising awareness for women. I’m ecstatic!”
In celebration of V-Day, proceeds from The Vagina Monologues performances will benefit Butterflies Fly Free, Inc. Tickets can be purchased for all performances.
Since 1998, the V-Day movement (vdaytour.com) has worked to stop violence against women and girls Worldwide. V-Day’s model of empowerment philanthropy has been a catalyst for activists, college students and anti-violence organizations to transform their communities in more than 112 countries. In February and March 2008, over 2000 V-Day benefits will take place in over 1120 communities and on college campuses in celebration of V-Day's 10th Anniversary.
