A new intellectual property consulting firm has combined two professional practices to improve services available for patent owners. AmiCOUR International LLC has announced that co-founders Ray Throckmorton and Scott Bechtel have formed the firm to offer royalty auditing services with investigative engineering capabilities. The engineering services allow auditors to address technical errors and claims arising during patent license audits.
Throckmorton, a CPA and veteran royalty auditor, stated, “Many of the licenses we see involve advanced technology such as semiconductors, complex software, or sophisticated organic chemistry. My clients may face claims that some products are covered by the license while others are not. AmiCOUR will not rely solely upon representations from the licensee to make a final determination of what technology and products are covered by a license.”
Scott Bechtel, the company’s president, added, “I managed a large portfolio of electronics and software patents licensed in a variety of industries. Our internal accountants could evaluate royalty reports but generally took part numbers and the licensee’s technical claims at face value. The first time I saw the report from our largest licensee, I knew it was wrong.” Bechtel went on to explain that his engineering background made it relatively easy to spot the problem. Bechtel has a physics degree and an advanced business degree from Carnegie-Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business. He ordered the audit and generated a seven figure recovery for his client.
AmiCOUR has opened locations in Lafayette, Indiana and Hinsdale, Illinois. The company has established relationships with recognized semiconductor analysis, analytical chemistry laboratories, and independent engineering experts. Bechtel added, “We are also developing technology resources in Florida’s space community to reverse engineer electronic systems. These require special skills because they combine circuitry with embedded software.” The company has sales affiliations in Florida and California and continues to expand. “We are pleased to be recruiting talented luminaries, including former president of the Licensing Executives Society Dwight Olson, who is already consulting for us,” stated Bechtel.
Throckmorton will serve as Executive Vice President to head the company’s audit teams and litigation damage calculation services. “We have resources to place large or small audit teams anywhere in the world,” he said, concluding, “And this includes access to experienced CPA’s from my former employer along with other reputable sources.” The company is already initiating audit work requiring engineering examinations.
